A Message from Mary Greer Landon, President Rotary Club of Hampton Roads 2016 - 2017
Welcome to our new Rotary year 2016 – 2017 which also is the 100th year celebration of the Rotary Foundation.
It is my honor to be President of The Rotary Club of Hampton Roads as we continue to “Light up Rotary” by being a “Gift to the World” in the unique way that we unite and bring it all together in this year’s theme - “Rotary Serving Humanity”.
Rotary International (RI) President, John Germ, is challenging us, as our own Joe Mulkerrin has done all these years, to continue our efforts to wipe out the last vestiges of Polio. Our club is, and always has been, dedicated to this effort. We march on!
In this Rotary year we will continue to step up our outreach and not hesitate to ask people to join us – not only in eradicating Polio, but in all our services that benefit humanity. As a club we have always focused on children, families, and education in so many ways. We have many positive challenges ahead in mentoring our new members, supporting flexibility to allow our members – young, working, retired, all ages – to combine (as much as we are able) our time, our talents, our energy, and our passion to serve humanity as only Rotarians can.
RI President John Germ asks us how we are making a difference in our community. I feel that we gain energy, strength, and friendship from each other at our meetings in order to provide the services that make a difference in our community. I think we support those that cannot make the meetings by sending them the bulletin so they can stay engaged, and asking how they are. We keep our Rotary friendships and relationships strong, and serve our own members well in times of need. I think we must show our club members, our community, and the world our engagement in all our endeavors through the various technologies available to us in order to strengthen and spread Rotarian ideals.
We have some seats at the ‘big table’ – our very own Past President Clenise Platt is our Assistant Governor. Our New Generations Director, Charlie Firestone, is now the District Chairperson and is helping guide us in keeping our Interact students engaged. Our indomitable Joe Mulkerrin is at the President’s right hand as an RI Director. We celebrate these devoted members who take us along to the District and the World with them!
We have served well:
- Polio Plus (red cup events)
- Road Rallye for the Food Bank
- Putt Putt Golf for our Educators
- Bowl-a-thon for our disabled children, families needing assistance or transportation for their sick children, veteran’s families, High Schools, Grade School reading and literacy services
- Four way test seminars for adults in career oriented education programs
- Paint Your Heart Out
- And many other service and fellowship projects
We will continue to serve and will add to our repertoire of services, fellowship and community activities. We will take care of ‘us’, serving our own Rotarians in need, and reaching out to others who want to join us, and still others who need us.
I ask you to continue to come together with our unique fellowship and team synergy that identifies us as the Rotary Club of Hampton Roads – Serving Humanity!
