About
Formed on February 22, 1980 - the eve of Rotary International's 75th anniversary, The Rotary Club of Hampton Roads is a proven leader in the Rotary movement. The club membership consists of 63 business and professional men and women and meets for breakfast each Friday at 7:30 a.m. at the Holiday Inn Executive Center on Greenwich Road in Virginia Beach, VA.
The club provides assistance to eleven charities, including The Rotary Foundation, through its Bowl-A-Thon fund raiser. This event raises over $50,000 in charity support and every club member participates in the activity. In addition, the club holds an annual Putt-Putt Golf tournament to support the club's Teacher of the Year awards. Each year four teachers in Virginia Beach and Norfolk are honored with a $500 award for their outstanding service.
The Rotary Club of Hampton Roads is true to the Rotary motto - "Service Above Self" - by participating in an Adopt-A-Highway program; assisting with Junior Achievement classes; adopting a local high school and teaching ethics classes; purchasing and distributing dictionaries to elementary students; providing grant funds to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts; providing reading assistance to school children; and helping to collect and ship medical supplies to third world counties, among other activities.
But we also have fun! Our weekly meetings are both spirited and informative. We endeavor to make our service projects enjoyable as well as beneficial to the supported organizations. Our social outings include Norfolk Tides baseball games; a celebration of Oktoberfest; trips to the theater; and an annual holiday party.
